The Department of Mathematics is dedicated to teaching and research. Our mission is to provide an exciting place for our undergraduate and graduate students to learn and do research in mathematical sciences. The department prepares students for a wide range of career paths, ranging from academia, the insurance industry, engineering, climatology, medicine, law and business. Our students are capable of assuming leadership roles in a rapidly evolving, knowledge-based, multicultural society.
Welcome to the Department of Mathematics and Statistical Sciences at Jackson State University where success in any academic or professional program begins. The Department offers programs leading to the following degrees: 1) BS in Mathematics, 2) BSED in Secondary Mathematics Teaching (Mathematics Education), 3) BS in Statistics, 4) MS in Mathematics, 5) MS in Computational Data Enabled Science and Engineering (CDSE), and 5) PhD in Computational Data Enabled Science and Engineering with a concentration in Computational Mathematics and Statistical Sciences (and other domain areas). The department also offers a minor in mathematics and a minor in statistics at the undergraduate level. The department currently has 12 faculty members, including 8 graduate faculty and approximately 15 adjunct faculty, approximately 43 undergraduate majors, and about 35 full- or part-time graduate students.
Our faculty is very active in research and takes undergraduate teaching seriously with commitment to student learning. Almost every class at the level of Calculus I and above is taught by a full-time faculty member. Our faculty is highly qualified, caring, and dedicated to all students and will train you to become the best mathematician or statistician you can be.
When you first enter any of our undergraduate degree programs, the University Academic Advisers in conjunction with the departmental Undergraduate Coordinator will initially advise you and will continue to advise you with personalized attention until you graduate. You will be assigned to one of our regular faculty members as your personal adviser in the second semester of entering the department programs. It is the responsibility of the adviser, the undergraduate coordinator and the university academic advisers to help you plan your program throughout your career at Jackson State University. Your advisor can also assist you with your plans after graduation. If you wish to change advisors at any time in your career, you merely need to notify the Undergraduate Coordinator.

Quality of Learning
We offer programs leading to bachelor’s degrees in mathematics, statistics, secondary mathematics teaching. We also offer graduate programs leading to master’s degrees in mathematics, the teaching of mathematics and a doctorate with concentration in computational mathematics and statistical sciences and award scholarships and provide financial support to our top students. We are in the College of Science, Engineering, and Technology and our students work with faculty and students from many other departments. We have a highly qualified, caring, and dedicated faculty, who will train you to become the best mathematician or statistician you can be. The doctoral degree program with a concentration in computational mathematics and statistical sciences is through the College of Science, Engineering and Technology’s Ph.D. program in Computational Data-Enabled Sciences and Engineering (CDS&E).

As a mathematician or statistician you can have careers in medical and pharmaceutical companies, high tech industries, and Wall Street Market trading and the doctorate prepares you for careers outside as well as within the academic setting.
